Welcome to paverlanguages.com!
paverlanguages.com is the website of freelance linguist/consultant Kennedy (Ken) Paver.
I provide translation, interpreting, writing, lecturing, training and consultancy services for businesses and universities. I am a linguist and communicator by background, with an MA in Modern Languages from Oxford University (1987), and a postgraduate qualification in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Kent at Canterbury (1988).
I have over 30 years' experience as a linguist, copywriter and communicator in the technology sector, specialising in translation and copywriting for a range of customers, including electronics firms, tech companies and major utilities.
I have also worked as a linguist, trainer and consultant in the nuclear industry and in related fields since 1988, specialising in nuclear power generation and nuclear safety, and in particular international safety reviews (IAEA OSARTs and WANO Peer Reviews).
I have worked on-site as a linguist and trainer at more than 30 nuclear plants in the UK, France (all 19 current EDF reactor sites, plus facilities operated by CEA and AREVA), Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Spain and China.
As a translator (working from French, German and Dutch into English) and interpreter (providing English-French/French-English liaison interpreting), I help my clients to communicate effectively with their target audiences.
I have previously worked as part of "Language Support" teams for nuclear safety review missions, providing support for the report-writing process to help safety reviewers to produce high-value English-language content, thereby optimising the product delivered to the customer.
I also provide copywriting services, leveraging multilingual source materials provided by customers to create English-language content for print and digital media in the nuclear and technology fields.
As a trainer, I have helped nuclear power plants to prepare for OSARTS and WANO Peer Reviews, and to improve their in-house practices to reflect stringent international requirements. In addition, I provide support for plants in the areas of interpreter training, logistics and communications relating to international safety reviews.
I have also worked as a consultant, project manager, teacher and mentor in the field of translation and interpreting. I have trained and mentored translators and interpreters working for various companies, and for a three-year period from 2007-2010, I worked as a sessional lecturer, delivering specialised translation modules on the undergraduate and Master's Translation Studies programmes at Aston University in Birmingham.
I am a member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI), and the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIoL). I have been Vice-Chairman of ITI, and a member of the ITI Admissions Committee and ITI Council (the Institute's governing body). I was Chair of the Editorial Board of the The Linguist, the journal of the CIoL, for a three-year period up to May 2018, and was co-opted onto the governing body of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIoL Council) in April 2018. I was an elected member of Council from April 2019 to October 2021.
In 2019, I gained Chartered Linguist status with the CIoL.
Starting in September 2021, I have resumed on-site interpreting services in France, assisting international nuclear safety review teams to communicate with on-site personnel, and helping to lead, train and mentor teams of interpreters at nuclear plants.
You can find my Terms of Business for translation and interpreting here.
